DJ Nitrogen’s ringtones for iPhone

iTunes supports an incredible half a million ringtones. No one is likely to use all of them. In fact, few people are likely to use more than a thousand of them in many years of using iPhone. Nevertheless, for all its abundance of choice, all that iTunes offers you at present is the ability to purchase ringtone and use them on your iPhone. For some people, that’s quite enough.

Bu DJ Nitrogen’s Ringtone Lab is the perfect tool for you if you want to do more. You can make your own ringtones, save and share ringtone recipes—the data that defines the ringtone, including fade, stop and start options—with others, and so on.

There are two things we particularly like about this service. For one thing, it joins you into a community, so that you can see what ringtones others are using, share your creations, and in general have real fun with people rather than just play with features on your own. Secondly, it makes sure that everything is legal. When you share a ringtone with another Ringtone Lab user, they get only your ringtone recipe, and not the actual audio file—and they can use your recipe only if they have purchased the main ingredient: the song.

Since multiple recipes are possible for a song, in the near future we can expect to see top ten recipes, votes and rankings for recipes based on most shared, or most used, and so on.

The beta version is on, at $4.99 per license. Number of ringtones? Unlimited. Get it here.
